Teaching Philosophy

My teaching Philosophy at OMC is to offer myself as a resource to students who are primarily responsible for learning the curriculum.  After I present and explain new material, students are encouraged to collaborate when practicing that new material.  Advanced math students typically excel in this type of instruction.  The students work with each other to benefit from each other’s strengths in understanding.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum consists of covering the material in the textbook.  The textbooks for grades 5, 6, and 7 are using a sequence of books designed for students in grades 6 through 8.  Advanced math students in 5th grade at OMC use the book designed for a 6th-grade class, 6th-grade advanced math uses the book designed for the 7th grade, and 7th-grade advanced math students use the textbook designed for an 8th-grade math class.  The 8th-grade advanced math OMC students use a textbook designed for a 9th-grade algebra course.

Background/Education

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Biology and a Master’s degree in Education from Arcadia University.  I also have a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University.  As a biomedical engineer, I worked for a non-profit medical equipment institute, the Department of Defense’s medical equipment acquisition group, and in the Radiology department of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  As an educator, I worked as an adjunct professor and lab manager for the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Arcadia University. For the last 20 years, I taught Chemistry, Physics, and some math at Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti high school and Archbishop Carroll high school.  I feel very fortunate to be teaching Advanced Math at OMC school in my retirement.  I also privately tutor students in math and physics at the high school level.
